The invitation
My Diving Demo Resort is a small, friendly beach hotel on the edge of the Grand Baie lagoon. Low buildings with white walls and wooden roofs, a garden of palms and tropical plants, a pool facing the sea: people come for the diving and stay for the calm. The dive centre is in the garden, two minutes from the room. The place suits divers who want to do everything on foot, couples, and families where some dive while the others enjoy the beach. No big complex and no shuttle here: reception, restaurant, beach bar and jetty are a few steps from one another.
The point on the map
Grand Baie is the liveliest village in the north of Mauritius: restaurants, markets, shops and boat trips are a few minutes away. The hotel is a little away from the centre, on a white sand beach sheltered by the reef. The international airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes away by road, in the south-east of the island; the hotel arranges the transfer on request. Port Louis, the capital, is 30 minutes away, and the Pamplemousses garden 20 minutes. The islets of Coin de Mire and Île Plate can be seen from the beach and are within reach by boat.
The rooms, and the nights
The hotel has two room categories, all on the garden level or the first floor, in low buildings. The Garden Room (28 m², 2 people, plus one child) opens onto the garden through a private wooden terrace, with two armchairs and a small table in the shade. Double bed, desk, wardrobe, fan and air conditioning, shower room with a walk-in shower. The Sea View Room (34 m², up to 3 people) looks over the lagoon from a balcony: coffee here comes with a view of the boats heading out to dive. Double bed, sitting area, bathroom with bath and shower. In both, the bed linen is white, the furniture wood and rattan, and the curtains open onto the morning light.
The taste of the place
The restaurant, open to the sea, serves a buffet breakfast: tropical fruit, breads, fresh juices, eggs cooked to order. In the evening, the menu mixes Mauritian cooking, the grilled catch of the day, curries and simpler dishes for children. The beach bar, under its thatched roof, makes fruit cocktails and fresh juices until sunset, one of the finest moments of the day on the terrace. Three board options: breakfast, half board, or all-inclusive, which adds lunch and drinks. Divers leaving at 8:30 find the buffet open from 7:00.
Something to do, or nothing at all
Between two dives, you can do nothing at all: the pool facing the lagoon, the sun loungers under the palms and the beach in front of the hotel are perfect for it. For the others, kayaks and snorkelling gear are lent free of charge, as the lagoon is calm and shallow in front of the hotel. A small spa opening onto the garden offers massages, welcome after a week of diving. The hotel also arranges the classic trips of the north: a catamaran outing to the islets, a visit to the Pamplemousses garden, the Port Louis market. Children play by the pool under their parents' eyes, and those aged 8 can try diving in the pool with an instructor.
L'appel du bleu
The dive centre is in the hotel garden: see the dive centre's page.
What to know before booking
Check-in from 14:00, check-out before 11:00; the room can be kept later on request, useful for those diving on the last morning (mind the time before flying, which the centre works out for each diver). The transfer from the airport takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. The best season runs from October to May, with warmer water from December to April; from January to March, a cyclone is possible. Children of all ages are welcome, cot on request. Dive gear can be left at the centre for the whole stay, rinsed and stored by the team.
